Describe Services/FTP Mirror here.
As of 2016-07-05, we mirror the following, on an 6 hour interval:
- HVSC - mirror of the High Voltage SID Collection
- gnu - mirror of ftp.gnu.org
- knoppix - mirror of Knoppix CD images
- knoppix-dvd - mirror of Knoppix DVD images
- aminet - mirror of Aminet
- scene - mirror of scene.org
- backports.org - mirror of Debian squeeze backports
- archive.debian.org - mirror of Debian archive
- zeroshell - mirror of Zeroshell
- ubuntu - mirror of Ubuntu
- ubuntu-iso - mirror of Ubuntu ISO images
- debian - mirror of Debian
The mirrors are publicly available at http://www.club.cc.cmu.edu/pub/ The web servers also have ftp servers installed, the mirror directory is / for anonymous ftp. The afs volume this goes to is club.service.ftp, but several mirrors' data is actually served via nfs mounted within here.
Our quality of service has been very low recently. It really only makes sense to dedicate this huge amount of storage and administration hassle if we can keep it reliable. Otherwise, people will just use better run mirrors, and our work is for naught. We should expeditiously deal with any failures, and be proactive in avoiding them.
The mirror service depends on cronned mirror scripts running on mirror.club, available disk space, the web and ftp server processes being able to get there and of course the network itself.
Questions:
- Do we want to mirror freebsd? At one time we tried.
- There is a "experimental-freebsd-installers", which seems to be relevant to an effort by dk08 to provide a means to install freebsd on a macbook. What about it? Should it be here?
- mirror.cs.pitt.edu also mirrors ubuntu, and other linux distros. Do we want to eliminate duplication amongst us, because we essentially share the same network?
- We should use our own mirrors :). Once they seem to be reliable enough, we should get our site listed in the official mirror lists.
