Boring Part

• Partial network outage post mortem

  • At some point the switch was unplugged
    • Not sure exactly how this happened
      • Was it not plugged in the whole way? Did it slip out?
    • Everything was fine when we left for dinner ~20:40 Sat
    • It wasn't beeping when we came back ~22:05 either
      • It does beep, but not very loudly
  • areese was in the process of installing a transfer switch on Rack 5 on Saturday to avoid this exact situation
    • Couldn't finish and so left it alone, but he will install it next Saturday
  • When we get money for next year, we can buy more transfer switches for everything else
    • We can also buy more UPS batteries, but the ones we have will likely last through summer
    • JFC budget for FY2016 still isn't passed
• Replacement power supplies and RAID batteries
  • All tested and good
  • Installed a few where needed; we have spares now
• Weekly newsletter
  • fseidel will start sending these in the fall

• OpenHatch event planning

  • They have pre-planned workshops and a "network of volunteers"
  • At this point, they want us to figure out when we want to hold the event
    • Spring 2016, because Fall 2015 is getting pretty packed

      • Avoid TartanHacks, Spring Break, Carnival, Finals

    • Might try to link it with the StuCo

    • Can we link this with the Stallman event?

      • Give candidate dates to OpenHatch and Stallman, take the intersection

      • We don't know yet whether we have money for Stallman...

  • We should do it in McConomy due to size

  • meribyte has offered to help plan the event

  • sbaugh will talk to Catherine about getting other funding for both OpenHatch and Stallman

    • If we can't get JFC funding for Stallman, plan on using Gift Fund rather than corporate sponsorship

  • Next official admin meeting is Tue 1 Sep, after fall classes begin
  • Open Hacking Hours continue unofficially through the summer as people are available

  • sbaugh will handle getting the movie onto an easily-playable storage medium

    • Would need to be a quick reimbursement

    • Take a survey at the beginning to gauge interest/hunger levels

  • sbaugh will prepare/circulate a proposal soon

  • Additional topics related to DevOps or sysadminery are welcome

• Fall New Member Event – Sat 12 Sep (after Activities Fair)

  • PuzzleHunt format

    • Themed puzzles surrounding the things we do
    • Having short technical(ish) puzzles handy would be generally good for the new member pipeline
    • Who is writing puzzles?
      • fseidel, cpreseau, sbaugh...
      • jocelynh is in charge of making sure puzzles get written

  • Google Form to get people to volunteer for talks
    • sbaugh will make this, have it sent to CS undergrads

    • We should get mini-Rashid (GHC 4307) if we can; we probably can't
    • WeH 5415/5421 are better than the GHC classrooms in terms of furniture/space
    • Reservation should be made two weeks before start of classes, then monitored to ensure it isn't usurped by Registrar
      • Try for WeH 5415/5421, GHC is backup plan

    • Same first four talks as Fall 2014
      • 2 Sep: Power Computing at CMU
        • Here are some AFS commands, basic things Kerb is/does, how to SSH, which machines you can use on campus (CClub machines!), printing/lpr
        • sbaugh would like to launch his containers project by this point
      • 9 Sep: Power Vim
      • 16 Sep: Power Emacs
      • 23 Sep: Power Git
    • Following week is TOC (Mon 28 – Tue 29 Sep)
      • That's where we had Retro last year

    • Don't want to compete with Git StuCo (98-174) or Vim StuCo (98-277)

  • Publicity
    • Get the series mentioned at first GPI and FIC
    • Try to do a poster for the whole term; it looks better that way
      • Leave open spots that say "TBD" or "Your Talk Here"
        • We need external speakers to sign up, and we won't get them months in advance
      • Will soon have another poster design for shorter series of talks, which will also be helpful
