Fire Suppression
Until February 2007, the machine room had a Halon 1301 system, at which point it was replaced by an FE-25 (branded HFC-125) system. Fun links:
Cooling
Until 2005(?) the machine room had an old EDPAC air conditioner.
- A bearing failure in this unit resulted in a large quantity of smoke being emitted, triggering the only known activation of B6's Halon system.
B6 is currently cooled by a Liebert Challenger 3000 (chilled water, infrared humidifier)
- "Humidifier Problem"s are not to be taken lightly and can result in B6 being flooded with water. This was discovered in November 2011 after several weeks of ignoring the Liebert's alarm (a previous "Humidifier Problem" was caused by a failed humidifier lamp, simply resulting in an inoperative humidifier).
- Due to the poor quality of campus water, calcium deposits can build up inside the humidifier pan, clogging the drain tube and interfering with the proper operation of the fill float. This should be cleaned periodically in accordance with the maintenance manual.
History
B6 shall always be B6. B7 is and always shall be the adjacent (non-cclub) room. Anything to the contrary is a lie.
Brief timeline as best known by contributers
- Ancient antiquity - Had a room in basement of Doherty Hall
- Mid-1990s (?) - old IBM research lab in basement of Cyert broken up into B6/B7, with B6 given to cclub
- May-August 2006 - Hallway to new Academic Development location pushed through room; room extended approx. 6 feet into B7 to partially make up for loss
- Renamed B7 (B7 becoming B8) by people clearly not in the know
