Industry Relationships
In an effort to get some food money and experiment with more kinds of events, we're attempting to build some relationships with companies. Document stuff related thereto here.

Initial Contact
Arranged by Catherine Copetas.
Company Relevance
These guys actually do quite a lot of computationally-intensive stuff, and the people we initially met with were actually developers (not HR!). They had just given a talk on how they use grid computing at an INI seminar. It sounds like they have a lot of clusters, the largest being about 1000 machines. They also mentioned that they believe they are the largest commercial AFS deployment in existence.
Meetings
kbare & mdille3 met with Wilson Hong & Alastair Angus (business cards) on 9/14/2007 to discuss possible events. Our impression was that the meeting went well and that they expressed definite interest in joint activities with the club for which they would supply food (and possibly giveaways) in exchange for being able to talk about computing at their company.
Current Plans
It looks like we should start with a tech talk of some sort for which they'd supply food. To get the maximum audience, we should hold it as part of (e.g., right before) some other club event. Right now, it looks like something like this may be attempted in October/November 2007.
NetApp
2 club members currently work for NetApp (kbare, lroop). dkozel once interned there and his father was on the company's board of directors for ~3 years.
Company Relevance
They make big storage. Obviously of interest to a club that runs a machine room.
Current Plans
In Spring 2012 we organized a tech talk with them where they supplied food. We're planning another in Fall 2012. In addition to this, they're in the process of donating some used storage hardware to the club as of August 2012.
